Looking to make a change in 2025? If, like many people, time off over Christmas has given you the opportunity to recalibrate and reevaluate, a new job might be on the cards.
If that’s the case, make sure you follow these five jobseeking must-dos in 2025.
1. Produce a quality (and tailored) resume and cover letter
It might seem old school, but a good resume is worth its weight in gold.
Invest your time upfront in creating an easily readable and well-laid out resume that you can then tailor for each role you apply for. Tailoring your resume doesn’t have to be super time consuming, the trick is to make the most relevant work experience jump off the page.
Many recruiters will take a look at your LinkedIn page as well, so make sure this is completely up to date and accurate.
Don’t forget that many recruitment agencies or internal HR departments are using AI to improve recruitment efficiency, so make sure you’re hitting all the important keywords in your resume.

2. Cast your net wide
Make sure you’re keeping an eye on all relevant job boards. This includes SEEK, Indeed, Jora and LinkedIn. Specialist agencies will also advertise, so know your market and the key players in recruitment.
Don’t just rely on job boards; try to make contact with any specialised recruiters so that you are front of mind when new roles come in.
3. Engage your networks
Networking is vital for finding work.
Call former colleagues, friends and acquaintances to let them know you’re looking. Leverage LinkedIn to connect with industry professionals and engage with relevant posts.
Industry events can be a great way to make important connections as well. Avalon Airshow is happening from 25th to 28th March this year, which is one of the biggest conferences on the defence industry event calendar.
Many companies reward their employees for passing on good referrals (Kinexus included!) so networking is a real win win for everyone involved. Kinexus’ referral rewards program can be found here.
4. Stay competitive
This will mean different things for different people, but ideas include:
Pursue certifications, courses or micro-credentials in high demand areas like cyber security or project management. Platforms like LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, and Udemy offer courses. A focus on professional development is an attractive quality for an employer.
Flexibility and a willingness to pivot across roles and responsibilities is crucial. Every company operates slightly differently; be open minded and you’ll find more doors will open.
5. Know Your Market:
Familiarise yourself with salary expectations and labour market conditions in your industry. Things might have changed from when you were last looking & it’s important to go into a job hunt with reasonable expectations.
Stay informed about changes in industry trends as well, such as technological changes or policy updates.
The 11th edition of Kinexus’ Defence Industry Insights will be released in autumn 2025. This includes all the latest salary data as well as industry trends and workforce expectations. Keep a look out on our socials for the release date.
