Emily Small

Contract Talent Manager

Nicknames: Em, Smallsey

How would you summarize what you do at Kinexus in one paragraph?

At Kinexus I am working to connect talented people with roles they can thrive in and enjoy. I am focussed on candidates for contract work and aim to create a supportive and opportunity-filled community for these candidates so that they can reach their potential as being assets within the Defence Industry.

What do you like best about working at Kinexus?

Definitely the people and culture! It’s a great place to work.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

My favourite part of the job is the ability to work with people on an individual level and play a part in making them happy, by helping them secure a job – always a good thing!

What has been your least favourite job and why?

McDonald’s – a burn scar from the French fry oil vat is a constant reminder of why it was my least favourite job.

What do you see as the next big game changer within the industry?

Definitely the massive increase of demand for appropriately qualified ICT people and engineers with security clearances to field the increase in Defence projects coming up. It’s going to be interesting to see how Kinexus, and indeed the entire industry, combat these issues.

What is your favourite interview question and why?

“What’s your desired pay rate?” Just kidding, it would be one that I was asked in my interview for Kinexus – “Five years in the future, what are you saying to your friends and family about what you did in the week?”. I liked this question because it forced me to picture my whole life plan, as opposed to just a career path – it was a question I wasn’t prepared for but I didn’t need to be because it requires a really organic and almost reflective response.

What are your 2 favourite albums? Why?

Queen Greatest Hits – timeless. And the Hairspray soundtrack – it’s been my favourite musical since I was young and I know every word to all the songs, which is at once both embarrassing and impressive. Probably more the former.

If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be?

Work at a baby panda sanctuary! As the person who picks up the little pandas when they fall off their mattress. I would probably

What’s your favourite movie?
American Pyscho

What’s your greatest achievement and how has it shaped you?

Jumping off the Mostar bridge in Bosnia – a rite of passage for young Bosnian men. This achievement shaped me both physically – I dislocated and fractured my tailbone – and mentally, by enforcing the importance of resilience and taking risks.
